Tips for Transfer Students

  • Make sure to get your application and all other required papers submitted before the deadline each semester – check with the Texas A&M Office of Admissions to check the deadlines each semester.
  • It is important that you select an engineering major as your 1st choice when you apply because engineering will not consider 2nd choice majors; if those who indicate engineering as their first choice do not get admitted into their requested major, they may be offered alternate engineering major(s).
  • Carefully review the recommended courses to take (found in the two tables, Track B or D, in Catalog 130, pg. 54). Successfully complete 24 credit hours from these tables, Track D (for most engineering majors) or B (for computer science) and have a 3.0 cumulative GPR. This is required for automatic admission into the college of engineering. Minimum GPR required for transfer admission to the University is cumulative 2.25 on 24 graded semester hours of transferable course work at the time of the application.
  • Take courses at other institutions that indicate you can be successful in engineering – courses such as Calculus, Physics, etc. Students who are not automatically admitted may be reviewed by a departmental academic advisor and they look for success in rigorous courses.
  • All Common Body of Knowledge (CBK) courses must be completed with a grade of C or better. D’s and F’s in CBK courses must be repeated.
  • Check with your school counselor to see if your school has completed an articulation agreement with the college of engineering at Texas A&M. The articulation agreement maps out the courses offered at other institutions that count toward and engineering degree at Texas A&M.
  • Ask your school counselor about Transfer Information Day on the Texas A&M campus - they are usually held on a Friday in early fall and early spring. This is a great opportunity for prospective transfer student, parents and counselors to get information from various offices on campus and from students and faculty in the College of Engineering.
  • The first semester is sometimes a big adjustment for transfer students and grades sometimes suffer. On the average, transfer students GPR for their first semester is between .5 - .75 lower than previously at the other institution. But then it will bounce back up, close to the GPR brought in. Also on the average, the retention and graduation rate of transfers is better than that of freshmen.
  • An excellend resource for prospective transfer students is the Transfer Guide, prepared by the TAMU Office of Admissions.
